Self-hosted media server for movies, music, and TV shows

Overview

Description

Jellyfin is a free, open-source media server that lets you organize and stream your own movies, TV shows, music, and photos from your own hardware. Built as a community-driven fork with no telemetry or paid tiers, it's a privacy-respecting self-hosted alternative to Plex and Emby.

Features

  • Media Organization: Automatically fetches metadata, posters, and subtitles for your library.
  • Live TV & DVR: Tunes into live TV and records shows via HDHomeRun or M3U tuners.
  • Hardware Transcoding: Uses GPU acceleration to transcode video on the fly for any device.
  • Multi-User Support: Manages separate libraries, watch histories, and parental controls per user.
  • No Telemetry: Runs fully offline with zero tracking, accounts, or forced cloud sync.
  • Wide Client Support: Streams to apps on TV, mobile, desktop, and most smart TV platforms.

Technology Stack

Server built in C# on .NET, with a web client in Vue.js. Supports FFmpeg for transcoding and ships official and community clients for Android, iOS, Roku, Android TV, Kodi, and more.

Requirements

Linux, Windows, macOS, or Docker; at least 2 GB RAM for basic streaming (more for transcoding multiple streams); a GPU is recommended for hardware transcoding; sufficient storage for your media library.
