Portainer is an open-source management UI for Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes, licensed under Zlib. It gives teams a single browser-based dashboard to deploy containers and stacks, manage images, volumes, and networks, and control access with role-based permissions — without needing to memorize the Docker or kubectl CLI.

Overview

Description

Portainer is an open-source management UI for Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes. Instead of driving containers, stacks, images, volumes, and networks from the CLI, teams get a single browser dashboard that works the same way across a laptop, a Swarm cluster, or a Kubernetes cluster. Portainer CE (Zlib-licensed) covers deployment, container/stack templates, log viewing, and console access into running containers, while role-based access control lets admins scope environments and namespaces to specific users or teams. A lightweight agent connects remote Docker hosts and Kubernetes clusters back to one central Portainer instance for multi-environment management.

Features

  • Multi-environment: Manage Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes from one dashboard.
  • App templates: One-click deploy for common stacks via Compose-based templates.
  • RBAC: Role- and team-based access control scoped per environment or namespace.
  • Container console & logs: Browser-based exec shell and live log streaming per container.
  • Registry management: Connect private and public image registries.
  • Central agent: Lightweight Portainer Agent links remote hosts/clusters to one control plane.

Technology Stack

  • Go backend
  • Vue.js frontend
  • Docker Engine API and Kubernetes API integration
  • Distributed as a single container plus an optional Agent

Requirements

  • Docker Engine or a Kubernetes cluster
  • ~2 GB RAM for the Portainer server container
  • Browser access to the management UI
