Durable execution platform for building reliable distributed applications

Overview

Description

Temporal is an open-source durable execution platform that makes it simple to write reliable, long-running business logic without manually managing retries, timeouts, or state machines. Workflows survive process crashes, deployments, and infrastructure failures, making it a self-hosted alternative to proprietary workflow and queue services.

Features

  • Durable Execution: Automatically persists workflow state so execution resumes exactly where it left off after a crash.
  • Automatic Retries: Retries failed activities with configurable backoff policies, no extra code required.
  • Long-Running Workflows: Supports workflows that run for seconds, days, or years without timing out.
  • Visibility & Debugging: Provides a web UI to inspect every workflow's full execution history.
  • Versioning Support: Lets you safely evolve workflow code while in-flight executions keep running.
  • Multi-Language SDKs: Offers first-class SDKs for Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, and .NET.

Technology Stack

Server written in Go, backed by a pluggable persistence layer (Cassandra, MySQL, or PostgreSQL) and Elasticsearch for advanced visibility search. Client SDKs cover most major languages.

Requirements

Linux, macOS, or Docker/Kubernetes; a supported database (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Cassandra); at least 4 GB RAM for a development cluster; Elasticsearch optional but recommended for production visibility.
